Summer Skin Health That long-awaited summer weather is right around the corner, and with pleasant temperatures and sunshine come special needs for exposed skin. No matter what the age, people must protect their skin this summer, being on the look out for sun spots, wrinkling and other signs of aging, dry skin, sunburn and skin cancer that come with overexposure to the heat and light of the sun.

In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation says that 3.7 million Americans are diagnosed with various kinds of skin cancer each year, including the deadly malignant melanoma. Denver, Colorado dermatologists and skin doctors all over the country urge young and old alike to protect the skin this summer by taking simple, common-sense precautions against the damaging effects of wind, weather and especially, sun.

Protect your skin by avoiding the sun and dressing properly.

The sun's ultraviolet radiation is most potent during the day. So, people should seek the shade between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. This includes summer days that are hazy or cloudy. Remember that sunlight reflected off white sand or water is powerful, too.

Regarding proper summer attire, skin doctors apply this general rule: "Cover up!" Cover exposed skin by:

  • wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants whenever possible (Darker colors and thicker weaves block more effectively.)
  • donning a broad-brimmed hat and wrap around sunglasses
  • applying a broad spectrum sunscreen lotion with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher

Sunscreen is wonderful protection but only when applied correctly and often. Sweat and swimming will wash the best of sunscreen right off. Be sure to reapply at least every 2 hours. Don't forget to put it on the back of the neck and tips of the ears--often neglected and often burned, areas of the body. Also, check the expiration date and buy a new product if necessary.

Protect your skin with medical care.

After the 40th birthday, men and women should have annual skin examinations. In addition, everyone should perform monthly skin check-ups at home, looking especially for new spots and changes in moles. Skin cancers, even melanoma, can be cured if caught in the earliest stages. In particular, inspect moles for asymmetry (Harmless moles are round.), borders that are sharp and clear, consistent brown color (no speckling), a diameter greater than a pencil eraser, and any evolution or change. Skin doctors call this inspection method the "ABCDEs" of melanoma.
